How the Scam Works:
-
You’re contacted—usually by phone, email, or text—by someone claiming to be from Coinbase’s security team.
-
They tell you that your Coinbase account is compromised and that to secure your assets, you need to move them to a Coinbase Wallet.
-
Here’s the catch: They will provide you with the recovery phrase for this “new wallet” and instruct you to use it.
-
If you follow their instructions, you are effectively giving them full control of the wallet. Anyone with a recovery phrase can access and drain a crypto wallet, no exceptions.
-
Once your assets are in the wallet, they will immediately transfer them to their own accounts, leaving you with nothing.
However, THEY will be giving you the recovery phrase. Let me be clear, no one should GIVE you a recovery phrase to use, if anyone has your recovery phrase, it can be used to steal the wallet.
They are very professional, and and it would be easy for someone to fall for this, if they do not understand how important it is to maintain OPSec on that phrase.
Thank you.
