On January 21, 2026, the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office in Saint Marys Township, Ohio arrested 43-year-old Chuan Zhao, a Chinese national residing in Brooklyn, New York, for serving as a money mule for an IT scam that started out with a fraudulent work-from-home opportunity.
In this case, the victim was asked to wire large sums of money on the false pretense that it would return to them in the form of cryptocurrency for the purposes of “case recovery.” This would eventually evolve into regular visits from Zhao so he could collect the money in-person.
Zhao is currently being held on a $600,000 bail at the Auglaize County Jail on two charges of felony theft by deception, following a coordinated sting operation between Auglaize County Sheriffs, Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
