In August 2024, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshalls Task Force, arrested 31-year-old Christopher Scott Matthews from Baconton, Georgia for facilitating jury duty scams that ultimately led to him being already incarcerated in his home state.
- According to investigators, Matthews made cold calls to his victims under the guise of a supervisor for their local law enforcement agency, falsely claiming there’s a warrant out for the recipients’ arrest after they missed jury duty.
- In order to make these fake warrants go away, the recipient will be asked to pay $1,500 in MoneyPak cards, with the numbers being provided over the phone.
- Matthews has been charged with 9 counts of impersonating a police officer (a class C felony), one count of second-degree theft of property and one count of identity theft.
