Christopher Aaron Murray ARRESTED for facilitating "phantom hacker" scam

On April 27, 2026, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation arrested 40-year-old Cary, North Carolina resident Christopher Aaron Murray for facilitating a “phantom hacker” scam, where

  • The scammers would call their victims and falsely claim their bank account was compromised.
  • In order to “secure” their funds, the victims will be asked to withdraw money from their bank account and hand them off to a designated courier, or money mule.
  • Murray, as a money mule, would pose as both a Wells Fargo agent and “FBI Special Agent Brian Blazer.”

Murray was arrested at the Charlotte Douglas Airport and is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail on charges of

  • Felony conspiracy
  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Exploitation of an elderly person.
