Capital One impersonation scam - 844-650-0128

Scammers are using 1-844-650-0128 pretending to be Capital One to phish information from customers. I received a letter in the mail on Capital One letterhead in a Capital One postage paid envelope claiming to be from the “Abandoned Property Department.” It had this number on it. When you call, you don’t get the standard Capital One VRU menu. Instead, you briefly listen to some hold music and then a scammer comes on asking for your name and SSN. Unfortunately, real Capital One does the same thing. Once they have that, they ask for your address. The guy I spoke to looked up my address on Google Maps. When I said Capital One should already have my address because they sent me this letter, he said “don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.” He then gave me a bogus “case number.” When I called back and referred to that case number, they (surprise, surprise) couldn’t look it up. When I asked them what department I was talking to, they said “customer service” even though the letter said it was the number for the “Abandoned Property Department.”

I suspect they got my name and address from the Capital One data breach last year and are now mailing phishing letters to get suckers to call in and give their SSNs.
