So I got a call from these guys on our landline, who claim to be from BT. We use bt for internet and phone lines.
They asked how many devices were on our network, then asked me to go into eventvwr. I was using a windows xp vm, so it was slightly different to what they were asking me to do, and we both got annoyed. Eventually they dirrected me to www.speedtest.btwholesale.com and had me run a speedtest, and tried to convince me that the 20Mbs down and 15 Mbps up was extremely bad. I do occasionally get speeds this low, so this might be a legit test, but he was saying 40 down, 20 up was expected (we are supposed to get up to 80 down). A google speedtest on my host showed 40 down, 15 up. Unfortunately we were expecting a call so I had a go at him and hung up.
Anyway, sorry for the long story, the number they called from was 01427940318
I reported this as phishing to action fraud, and apologies if I should be posting the number in a different way.
@Charles-IV#51096 One big scamming gang from Kolkata, India specializes on BT (UK) and Telstra (Australia). Their MO is to gain access to your computer and they pretend they are refunding 300 pounds to your bank account (they convince you to open the online banking). Through tricks they make you believe that they deposited 5300 pounds by mistake so they want a refund of 5000 via gift card. All smoke and mirrors.
@drwat#51131 thanks, I was interested in what their method would be
