On February 20, 2025, the Evesham Police Department in New Jersey arrested 28-year-old Cherry Hill resident Brij Shukla for serving as a courier/money mule for an FBI scam that involved:
- the scammers calling their victims under the guise of an FBI agent to falsely claim that they owed the government $40,000.
- The victim would be asked to withdraw the money from their bank account and hand it off to a “courier,” who would arrive at the victim’s doorstep.
Though released under the state’s bail reform laws, he is due to appear in the Burlington County Superior Court on the charge of third-degree attempted theft by deception. If convicted, Shukla will face 3-5 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
