Normally a screenshot would go here, but an error has occurred, so here’s the contents of the text message sent by spoofing the shortcode used by the NY State Government:

“B 0F A: Transaction of $723.42 was declined. Confirm if this was you: (888) 836-4437. Reply YES to confirm.”

I called the toll-free Inteliquent line, and was immediately asked to provide the number for my nonexistent ATM debit card alongside

  • the last 4 digits of my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
  • the PIN number
  • the CVV
  • The card’s expiration date
  • My street number
  • My ZIP Code.

Afterwards, the automated assistant will say there was “no fraud” on my account, though the scammers behind that will have all of my fake banking details to make some illegal purchases.

The number has been reported to the FBI, and I have recently received the following text message from the State of New York:

“The previous message was sent in error and not on behalf of New York State. Do not reply to the message or call the phone number.”
