All:

We've been stoked to provide BobRTC to the community. I wanted to take some time to highlight some abuses we have had to deal with and what progress we're making. I know most of you can't wait soon enough for additional features.

Since launch though we've been working on bugfixes and moderator improvements on the platform which you cannot see. We had a big win when we optimized voice traffic which greatly increased our capacity to take more calls. We also have a behemoth new server coming to Europe which will speed up call connections a bit.

The core nugget of BobRTC that makes it possible to work as a scambaiting platform IS the phonebook. The reason why we do not give you a dialpad unlike Google Hangouts, Skype, FireRTC is because of rampant abuse. Google and Skype deal with plenty of law enforcement subpoenas to turn over IP records (which they retain permanently) on dialed calls. FireRTC has limited ability to deal with a large volume of data requests coming from law enforcement which explains why their platform is severely locked down and closed to new signups.

BobRTC gets around this problem by using trained professionals to curate a telephone directory of known scammers. Obviously this is also our weakest point in the system--because entering in garbage makes our service unusable. For the last 3 weeks we have been studying the abuses of the phonebook. 100% of those abuses have not come from scammers, but from a few of you who consider yourselves to be scambaiters.

At BobRTC we have implemented bots to help screen for garbage phonebook entries coming from some malcontents. Most of these were children who discovered the service who were horrified to discover that we do not have a delete feature---so when they entered the phone numbers of their friends in the telephone directory, scambaiters started calling. And calling. And calling. And calling. Nonstop.

We also have a few users who simply do not understand what a spoofed phone number is and they proceed to enter phone numbers of legitimate companies and personal cell phones of robocalling victims. While it's easy to make a mistake once in a while, a few of you have attempted (repeatedly) to enter in garbage. Some of you seem determined to do it.

As a result, last weekend we raised the threshold for phonebook entries to a minimum of 580XP before the system will permit a phonebook entry from you. And yes, this requirement is checked at the server. While it certainly is likely that someone who scambaits on the platform and gets the Phonebook Entry Add function back on to their account they will resume entering in garbage phone numbers that are not safe to call---that person now has more to lose... as a suspended account will not get any dialing features granted to it, no access to bots, and no multiparty conferencing.

For some of you who have been doing this repeatedly we have shadowbanned you. This allows you to continue to use BobRTC while we will ignore whatever garbage phone numbers you submit. Even when the Add Number function returns to your account, when you try to submit again it will thank you for the add as normal and proceed to throw your number that you submitted in the trash.

We have also had a couple of users set their account names to escaped characters hoping to find a SQL injection vulnerability. For those special few: if you're wondering why your XP has been set to -1,000,000XP or -10,000,000XP... it's because I have been monitoring your malicious behavior.

And finally there's an extra special lot who have had their access to BobRTC completely stripped and your Discord is blocked both on the site and at the phone switches.

It's difficult enough to juggle how to store and retain a good resource (known inbound scammer numbers), with a segment of our population that is spending more time trying to destroy BobRTC than they are calling scammers. That is on top of the complaints of numbers that appear non-working because users are XP farming and forcing scammers to de-forward their toll-free numbers because they're being flooded, or a scammer got cold feet and parked their number because all the calls they have been getting were from scambaiters.... on top of the fact that many scam shops are not 24/7 so nothing appears working after 9PM.

(For this last issue, I've been toying with a number of different ideas to allow users to signal feedback about the number they are working on while making it difficult for a BobRTC user who is actually a scammer from being able to abuse a real-time feedback feature)

BobRTC is a very powerful scambaiting tool because it is the only easy-to-use service that scammers cannot block. To become even more effective against scammers we need as many working scammer phone numbers as we can find entered into the phonebook. We have dedicated people dumping numbers into BobRTC who receive little thanks for all the hard work they are doing (looking at you Joe, TakeDown, MQ9, Cal, etc).

We would also like YOU to help in this effort by submitting solid scammer numbers that are NOT spoofs. 580XP can be easily earned by a few days of solid scambaiting work.

**We are also accepting applications for the position of Phonebook Moderator** This is a special role on BobRTC which will give you the ability to block numbers in the phonebook, place shadowbans on user accounts to block phone number entries that they submit from making it into the phonebook, and the ability to strip bad links to Scammer.info off of entries. If you have been scambaiting for a while and would like to help us curate the phonebook, please reach out to the BobRTC mods on the TLS Discord to send in your application.

Requirements:
- Scambaiting for at least 6 months
- Your XP level is at least 240 (send a DM screenshot of your MyActivities screen, a BobRTC Developer will check your account prior to role assignment)
- You have demonstrated in some way that you know how to filter bad from good (find a prior thread you have posted to on scammer.info complaining or providing detail of a submitted phone number here)

You do not have to be a mod on Discord, scammer.info in order to be granted the Phonebook Moderator role. Keep in mind that moderator actions that you take are audited.

Honestly, I think over time these issues will go away. Call Tokens do have value to them. In a roundabout way, call tokens do represent actual money that is moving around between the telephone carriers who put the calls through.

While the bulk of us continue to dial scammers, we work to add more features and we build XP and call tokens, the value of a Discord alt account with 0XP and 0C on BobRTC starts to become worthless.

I do intend to put leaderboards up this weekend since so many of you have been asking for it and want to compare your progress against fellow scambaiters.

@kenzo#102016 kenzo I’ve beem scambaiting since last year started july an would love to apply for this position im over 500 xp with close to 2000 tokens to make long distance calls have reported bad numbers that are from innocent citizens even helped a lady kinda clear her number here on scammer.info would be honored kenzo!!!

Kenzo,

I too would like to apply for this position.

I'm fairly new to scambaiting but have been using BobRTC since day one and have loads of XP and Coins.

I understand the importance of both the Push back to these Scammers and having correct numbers to troll..

BobRTC, to it’s great credit, does go to some trouble to try and reduce the possibility of people using the system to call a number that is not associated with a scammer (like the number of a school to call in a bomb threat, or the number of a police department to call in a SWAT alert, or the number of an ex-spouse so they will be harassed, or the number of a competitor company so they will be harassed, etcetera). The limitation that you can only call numbers posted in the BobRTC phonebook helps in that regard, as does the requirement that you have some level of BobRTC XP points before you can post a number to the phonebook. BUT…

It only takes one person to post one number to a school or a police department, and then for that person to call that number and make a bomb or SWAT threat, and BobRTC could go the way of FireRTC.

Removing inappropriate numbers from the phonebook and punishing those who posted them could be too little too late. In some cases, the damage may have already been done to the real people who own those numbers. For instance, how would you like it if someone in your family, or if your legitimate employer, received 1000 calls/day from BobRTC users for 3 days before someone at BobRTC finally realized that the number was not that of a scammer?

As BobRTC becomes more popular, the phonebook will suffer from the competing forces of the need for more numbers of legitimate scammers versus the need to make sure that no morons or malicious assholes post numbers of legitimate non-scammers.
