So I’m currently taking this online course and I had a big workload so I got curious about these homework services. For anyone wondering, after looking into them I don’t really wanna use them for ethical and monetary reasons.
Anyway, I got on the website and made an account with fake information (used a mailinator email address) and uploaded a sample of the homework I needed help with. Immediately a chatbox with someone named "Steve" responded saying they could do the whole thing for $70 even though there was a "pay now" box that said $120. I asked what deal with the pricing was and he said that because it was only 7 problems, it would be $10 a problem. I was confused by this because each problem had multiple parts. For example, problem one had parts A through P on it.
Anyway, we got into it and I started to sense a scam. A found reviews of the website that said they take your money without doing the assignment or they half ass it if they do send it to you. I started asking where they were located and got conflicting answers. I asked how I could become an employee to earn money doing people's assignments, because the website said you could make $500 a week doing it. He responded saying that they don't hire people. I then asked if he could send me a number to call. Unfortunately the number they sent was for a different business. I then offered him my number to call me. He agreed and I sent him a friend's number and my friend said that the person that answered had a thick Indian accent. I tried to use this information to get a calling number back, but the number he called from was not a real phone number. An important thing to note is that throughout the chat conversation he kept sending this pay now link. I never clicked on it.
After messing with him a bit more I gave up and went back a couple days later. The website does have a chat box that automatically appears without the need for an account so I used it to mess with them a bit more. Long story short, the guy started saying they'd report me to their "cyber crime people" and that I'll be "subpoenaed before cyber police." I don't really buy what they were saying because he was threatening to track my IP but then a few minutes later started asking for my number in order to talk to their lawyer.
If anyone wants to you can go to the website to talk to them via the chatbox. Unfortunately I didn't get a number from them but maybe someone else will be more lucky. I guess we'll find out the outcome if I get a letter of subpoena or get a call from the police since he said that would come next. Out of curiousity, do any of you guys ever believe what these people tell you? Is there any truth to what they say when they outright threaten you? I don't feel like I should be worried, but I do get that chilly feeling sometimes when I get told those things.
