On May 22, 2025, the Anakapalli Dist. Police raided an illegal call center operating out of 3 locations in Andhra Pradesh for facilitating a Social Security scam against American residents, where:
- The scammers make illegally-spoofed calls to their victims under the guise of Amazon to falsely claim fraudulent charges were made under their victims’ identity.
- The victim will be forwarded to coworkers who posed as officers with their bank and, later, the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
- The proceeds obtained through gift card purchases will be laundered in the form of cryptocurrency.
33 individuals were arrested, including operators Punit Goswami from Maharashtra and Avihant Daga from Rajasthan. During the raids, police also seized several computers, networking devices, cash, furniture and other household amenities.
