Almost Got Scammed

Somebody who sounded American with a southern accent left a voice mail for me. Like I said he sounded very professional with a southern accent saying he was with the County Sheriffs Department. He said (in a very professional manner) that a jury summons fail to appear notice was sent to me back in July, at a previous address. He was able to give me my two previous addresses. He asked for me by name. After speaking with him, he said I was an upstanding citizen and the fine would be dropped. However due to the “Computer System Upgrade” he was unable to dismiss this ‘civil matter’ over the phone. He gave me his name as Sgt Sellick.

We set up a time to meet at the county courthouse to pay the fine and then have it dismissed, get reimbursed like it never happened. He also said bring two pieces of ID for verification. I went to the courthouse to meet with him. The sheriff deputy at the x-ray and metal detector told me this is a scam.

Now they have my real phone number, which I don't use to scambait.

Looks like they’re getting better at their game, unfortunately.

Also, I can't believe the new types of scams they come up with.

Thank goodness that nice deputy warned you.

Do you happen to still have the number they called you on?

Did he actually want to meet with you, this guy is local?

If he is a local scammer, local law enforcement should be interested in helping you.

Its a felony to impersonate a law enforcement officer.

My guess is that he calls you back, saying he missed the appointment, and was called out, somewhere along the line google play cards will be the authorized county payment system.

Sorry you had to got through this.

I googled the number, it’s a local law firm. But no body answers the phone. I called about 15 times in the course of an hour and each time I got “This voice mail box has not been setup” It’s a known scam but he didn’t threaten me with arrest and pay with google cards. It was a ruse to waste my time.
