On October 1, 2025, the Middletown Police Department in Connecticut arrested 24-year-old Fort Worth, Texas resident Akbar Basha Mohammad for serving as a money mule for a Norton refund scam, where
- The scammers will create fake email invoices, falsely claiming their victim was charged $450 for a Norton antivirus subscription they never signed up for.
- When the victim calls their designated “suppoat” line, “Brad” will remotely connect to his victim’s computer and manipulate their banking details to falsely claim they received a refund of $49,500.
- The victim will be asked to withdraw money from their bank account and hand it off to Mohammad, a designated courier/money mule who will pose as a Norton employee by the name of “Jack” and retrieve the money in a KFC parking lot.
Mohammad’s car was stopped by authorities in Arkansas on August 6, with Mohammad claiming he was returning to Dallas after visiting Nashville, despite the fact that he was driving from Connecticut to New Jersey. Officers uncovered $87,750 in cash when searching his vehicle, and has noted that he entered the country on an expired visa and has “prior suspicious activity reports.”
Mohammad is currently being held at the Connecticut Correctional Center on a $250,000 bond, being charged with
- First-degree larceny
- First-degree telephone fraud
- Conspiracy to commit first-degree computer crime
- Conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny
- Conspiracy to commit first-degree telephone fraud.
