They claim to be IATA or other certified agents, and there are not just one or two such companies but probably hundreds or even thousands.

A shit ton of these kind of companies are shady as fuck and use really manipulative language to seem more “legit” than they actually are, and the wording is practically the same language the genuine scam companies use to hide away.
”We are reservations desk”
”We work with every major airlines”
So a lot of the time, for me, when deciding whether or not one of these companies are scam or shady, it comes down to what they explicitly say:
If the ad says they are the Delta airlines support line, then scam.
If they say they are a Delta airlines support line, but clearly say they are not Delta, then they’re fine.
The same applies to what the agents say: Agent says they are Delta = scam; Agent says they are a third party support line = fine.
But when it comes to how much they charge, as long as they are honest in who they are, what they are offering, they can probably legally charge whatever the hell they want and it’s solely up to the person trying to book a flight on whether or not they want to go through or find an alternative.
Thanks for sharing your view. I understand your point about wording and how the company presents itself, but I still feel the situation is not fully clear. Even if a company openly says they are a third-party, it doesn’t automatically make them safe or ethical. Real tickets don’t guarantee that the customer’s card details, refunds, cancellation policies or data privacy are protected.
My main question is:
How exactly do these companies operate legally and what loopholes allow them to continue, even when their practices are misleading and overpriced?
I want to understand things like:
• Who is responsible for protecting customer payment details?
• Are these agencies required to follow any regulations like PCI-DSS or data privacy standards?
• What risk does a customer face if a refund is needed or a chargeback happens?
Real ticket doesn’t mean real safety the airline refunds only the fare, but the agency keeps the service fee. And with rented/commission gateways, customers have zero protection if something goes wrong.
• Why are so many of these companies running without proper documentation?
