On March 23, 2026, New York State Police arrested 19-year-old Hicksville resident Aidan Chung Loon Chan for serving as a money mule for a phantom hacker scam operation, where:
- The scammers will call their victims, i, this case an elderly Williamson resident, falsely claiming their bank accounts were compromised.
- In order to “safeguard” their assets, the victim was asked to withdraw $20,000 from their bank account and hand it off to a designated courier, or money mule.
- As a mule, Chan would travel to the victim’s residence, collect the money and later transport it to another individual downstate.
Chan was arraigned in Wayne County, New York and charged with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
