Advice please Roland VT-4

I just bought the Roland VT-4. Im using this with my MacBook Air 2015.

Im using a 6.25mm Jack on the back Line out (L/Mono) to a USB converter on the side of my laptop. It doesn’t register any sound whereas If I add a 3.5mm cable on the front of the Roland (Phones) and have that connected to the same USB converter I here faint sound but its no way near crystal clear.
