Advice on scambating?

Hey all! First off, let me say that I’m new to this forum and scambaiting as a whole (you’re gonna eat me alive out here, aye?). It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do, however!

Anyway, I call these numbers (tech support scammers), and usually say something along the lines of “I got a notification telling me to call this number.” After that, they always hang up… What am I doing wrong? Is it all the same guy who knows it’s me?

@Viewbob#65434 I was once in your shoes… so I know the feeling of being brand new to scambaiting.

If there’s one takeaway, it’s to NEVER use your real phone, as they have the ability to track it down and a whole load of creepy stuff. Use free calling apps like FireRTC (my personal favorite since you can record calls), TextNow, and Google Voice. There’s many more, obviously.

You mentioned that they were hanging up on you very quickly. If your a kid, they won’t take you seriously, mainly because of your voice. I’m a “kid” (14) but I have the ability to deepen/change my voice so they won’t know. If your an adult and they still hang up on you, here’s what I recommend:

  1. Use different voices

Like I mentioned earlier, building characters with different voices in turn makes for longer calls since they will think it’s a different person. It’ll also, imo, make your calls way funnier with better reactions. If you can’t change your voice, then at the very least try to change your caller id (NOTE: changing caller id only works on FireRTC, which is another reason why I prefer it over the others). Additionally, there’s voice changers online if you choose to do so.
  2. Using a VM

VMs (Virtual Machines) are basically a fake display of a computer screen. You can download VMs from Oracle and other companies for free. I personally don’t use VMs, but it will definitely make longer calls, as they’ll be fooled into thinking that they accessed your real computer. This is where the term “scambaiting” was coined, since you quite literally bait them out and waste their time.
  3. Having a story

You should know what to say before calling. Otherwise, you’ll be stuttering and the scammers, however stupid they are, will know. Think of a funny backstory (I did one where I was asking for carpet cleaning services for my goats) or just stick to the classic “My computer’s hacked, please help”. The story changes depending on who your calling (ex: for the IRS you might wanna say that your broke or something along those lines).

That's my two cents on scambaiting. Overall, have fun, be safe, and definitely annoy the shit out of them! If you need some more inspiration you can check out some of my recordings (click on my profile and find the links that say recordings.firertc). Additionally, you can check out some other people's recordings to get a better idea.

EDIT: Almost forgot the swear words you should say to the scammers (all of them are in hindi)
Bhen Chod: Brother fucker
Maadar Chod: Motherfucker
Chutiya: Idiot
Beti Chod: Sister Fucker
These are just a few. You can search up a whole list of curse words in Hindi online if you want more.

Use a good quality VPN and do all your fun stuff within it.

First, Welcome to the Forum! As Devnull suggested, getting a good vpn is a good idea. If your going with the Virtual Machine Call Route, some tips I can suggest.

Depending on the setup, you'll want to make the virtual machine look like it's actually being used. Download programs, put some bookmarks/history and usage, Never sign into your main accounts ever. Put some files, folders and such. Hide the fact that it's a VM so that they don't hangup right away and or realize it's a VM. Make it look like the user that may be in your "call story" as such what MangoMonster suggested.

Stick with a known OS, Most scammers for me at least, get mad at older operating systems.

Disable all shared folders that you may have connected to the host machine and if possible isolate the VM as much as possible, the last thing you want is scammers getting your host or network involved in some way.

(Use Chrome)
For the trolling side, You could setup traps on the VM.

VM'S are great for extending the amount of time a call will last, though however they are lot more to setup, you'll likely want to do this when you have plenty of freetime in the day.

Overall, those are some of my tips,
Mango covered a lot of good tips, including the Character Building.

For those who take the VM route, learn about snapshots. As the name implies, you take a snapshot after the VM is ready.

Once you let a scammer on it, you can quickly undo it. The undoing is fast because if you are using VirtualBox, the changes are tracked in a separate file. All that has to be done is said file is deleted by the undo.
