The scammer will send random message requests to users on Discord. Once accepted, they will ask if you recently purchased something on Steam as it has been “accidentally reported for fraud” instead of an imposter
As my Steam account was supposedly “under review” for “suspected illegal purchase activity,” I was asked to talk to a supposed “Steam moderator” on Discord or else I would run the risk of “breaching federal law.”
The “moderator” I was asked to speak to, “Csham,” first asked me to send a screenshot of the earlier conversation I had with this “pangtuklaw3” guy… so I used it as an opportunity to send a Grabify link to youareanidiot.cc, a modern recreation of the iconic “You Are an Idiot” joke virus.
Sadly, “Csham” was using a VPN to try and prevent me from grabbing their IP address, but I was able to uncover some interesting details, such as the use of a Macbook to scam victims and the standard GMT time zone.
The fake mod eventually got onto me and changed their username to outrageous_papaya_24081
