A difficult number to figure out - HSBC 03456081878 "Fraud"

Hey all,

These people called my Mum today claiming to be from the fraud department in HSBC
The number they called from or spoofed is 03456081878

When I look up the number it shows up a lot of the official hsbc websites, such as here were it appears in an example text message image: Received A Text? | Bank Scam Texts - HSBC UK

I’m leaning on the side of caution here and checking butI believe it’s fake. I’m not completely sure though.

Can anyone clarify if this is really the fraud team and if yes - would they phone asking for a DOB etc from people?

The number comes up as neutral on phone checker websites. Some claiming it’s real some saying it’s fake. https://who-called.co.uk/Number/03456081878/activity-map and https://www.tellows.co.uk/num/03456081878

I know this is not a sure way to tell but it can be a indicator of authenticity; Mum said they sounded professional.

It sounds a lot like a scam to me but it’s a little more difficult to tell than others because of the above reasons, also there are people claming it is real / verified on phone number checker websites.

If it does turn out to be a scam i’ll be trying to track down the scammers infomartion such as websites etc.

Be cautious. Call them from a number which is in the bank statement.

The scammers most likely spoofed it if it’s a scam, your mum should actually just call proper HSBC and speak to them not from that number ideally a different one.

10-4 procede with caution

You can trust a number when it is posted on an official website, such as the one you posted. On that very same website, they tell you what numbers they use for Fraud Alerts:

Scam alert

The numbers below are the only ones that HSBC’s fraud team will ever ask you to call. Any other number you’re asked to call will NOT be our fraud team.

03456 031 832 (+44 1126 260 049)
03456 081 878 (+44 1470 697 094)
03456 008 891 (+44 1470 697 005)
03456 008 050 (+44 1470 697 093)
03452 669 337 (+44 1470 697 107)
03456 039 984 (+44 1126 362 224)
03456 052 324 (+44 1226 322 011)
03456 070 269 (+44 1126 260 049)
03456 100 135

They also tell you to call the number on the back of the card if you feel uncertain. I agree, the number might have been spoofed if they were trying to scam your mum, but you did not say what they originally wanted. It is common for banks to ask some sort of verification, so they know it is the actual account holder.

Correct.
I haven’t yet used HSBC but I do use the British banking system.
It’s not rare that they do extensive research on the caller.
I got roasted by my bank last week for a bank trasfer.
Best off calling the number at the back of the card
