This is the message I received from the official bank:

Please be advised that we are aware that customers and non-customers are now regularly receiving 'scam' or 'phishing' e-mails, sometimes alleging to be from HSBC Bank.

These e-mails try to convince the reader that they are due to receive a large sum of money in return for an advance payment to cover administration costs. Any such e-mail will not, despite appearances, be from HSBC Bank and should therefore be deleted immediately. Our IT security department are already aware of this type of message and are currently undertaking action to protect our mutual interests.

Further, please note, you should never send funds to anyone who says you will receive a money prize in return.
