On May 14, 2026, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office in San Rafael, California arrested 51-year-old San Francisco resident Yiwei Zhang for serving as a money mule for an Apple refund scam, where
- The scammers will send fraudulent emails to their victims, falsely claiming unauthorized charges were made from their bank account.
- The victim will be asked to withdraw $20,000 from their bank account and hand it off to a designated courier, or money mule.
Zhang was arrested at his residence and is currently being held on a $75,000 bail at the Marin County Jail on charges of
- Grand theft (2ct)
- Theft/embezzlement to elder (2ct)
- Conspiracy to commit a crime
