And this is a very real threat. This was not what I thought I would be doing when I left the agency, but I’m spending as much time on Social Security now as I was in in my time in the agency. And when the White House asked me to go there, Mr. Leader, they admitted that, look, because of House Republican cuts, nearly 3 billion below what President Biden had proposed, Social Security staffing had been reduced to a 50 year low even as baby boomers of my generation swell their ranks every day to a new all time high. So when the White House called me, they said, look, full confession. This is a tough, tough time in the agency. But as you mentioned, those hard working men and women there who did not quit, they kept the checks going without interruption even with the evacuation of COVID a lot of managers going in at their own risk to make sure the mail got opened and claims got processed. But I watch those men and women improve every customer facing timeliness metric with the exception of one. But I’ll give you just two of them to illustrate what I’m talking about. When you think about this as a big insurance company that has to process claims and respond to customers. When I walked into the agency, the average speed dancer on the 1, 800 number and this is average now if you call it peak times of the day, it could be a lot longer, but the average was 42 and a half minutes. They got that down to 12.4 minute speed. Answer by October of that same year, more people now die awaiting initial disability decisions because part of Social Security is to make disability determinations if God forbid, you know, you fall at work and you can’t work anymore. So the wait time on those could be as much as a year just for an initial disability determination. It was 362 days in my own state of Maryland. And we managed to break the back of that growing backlog and get it down so that for the last 27 weeks we were closing more cases than we were opening. And in short, they had it all moving in the right direction until the election happened. And now Elon Musk with a chainsaw has been going after this agency with a vengeance. Actually paying people with your money to leave the agency right away. If people are retirement eligible, they told them, we will pay.

What it does is it extends hold harmless protections to state and local law enforcement officers if they work with their federal counterparts again to get violent criminals who are committing crimes in our community out of our community. Other things that I’ve done. Belo’s act that’s named after a soldier of mine when I served in the military. Belo was his last name. And it stands for benefits that endure for lifetimes of service. And it expands the ability for the family members of people who have had a service member die as a result of a service connected disability. It extends to them national parks access. Currently that access is only available to people who have died in the line of duty. And again, this expands it to all service connected deaths. Another piece of legislation, bipartisan legislation that I’m proud to bring, is the Medicare and Medicaid Fraud Prevention Act. And this legislation requires that if a doctor or other provider passes away, we have to go scrub the databases and remove the provider number from those databases because that that then takes that provider number out of circulation and if the provider is dead, it prevents that number from being used for any sort of fraudulent purposes.
